Dr Jeremy Allan Fisher

Known as Jeremy Fisher. Born: 9 November 1954, Te Aroha New Zealand.

I live in Haberfield NSW, the Federation garden suburb with my partner of eighteen years.

I’m a footnote of gay history. I was thrown out of Robert Menzies College at Macquarie University in 1973 when the dean discovered I was gay. As a result, the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) put a green ban on building work at the university citing religious persecution of homosexuals. This was the first time an industrial union took action in defence of gay rights.

I was an early member of Gay Liberation and an original 78er. I was on the first Board of the Sydney Star Observer (SSO)... I’ve contributed particularly to gay writing in Australia over the years, through Campaign, GLP: A journal of sexual politics, and the SSO. Otherwise, it’s been a matter of being out in the suburbs with my partner, quietly demonstrating that gays are everywhere. I’m currently completing a personal history of thirty years of being out and proud.
